The Patek Philippe Seal: The Highest Standard in Watchmaking
The Patek Philippe Seal (PP Seal, Fig. 1-3-15) has been in use since 2009. As a new symbol of supreme watchmaking excellence, the PP Seal surpasses all existing standards in the Swiss watch industry. It represents Patek Philippe's commitment: every timepiece crafted since 1839 is backed by lifetime maintenance and restoration services.
As a family-owned watchmaking company, the Patek Philippe Seal reaffirms that quality will never be compromised. The trust and support of its customers are its most precious assets — and through this "Seal," Patek Philippe ensures its timepieces can be passed down through generations (Fig. 1-3-16).

The "Patek Philippe Seal" is an extraordinary, all-encompassing quality hallmark applied to fully completed timepieces. It covers the movement, case, dial, hands, crown, pushers, strap, bracelet, clasp, and every other component. The PP Seal evaluates not only technical, functional, and aesthetic aspects, but also visual appearance, timekeeping precision, reliability, and the quality of after-sales customer service.
The specific requirements of the PP Seal are as follows.
1. The Watch
(1) Patek Philippe's watchmaking production process surpasses all traditional standards. Every detail is rigorously inspected to achieve the best results — ensuring outstanding quality, refined design, accurate timekeeping, and reliable performance. The decorative finishing of all components — movement, case interior and exterior, dial, pushers, and crown — must be executed to the highest possible standard, without exception.
(2) All development, production, and assembly processes strictly adhere to Patek Philippe's various watchmaking techniques and exceptional capabilities, fully in accordance with the finest traditions of classical watchmaking.
(3) Throughout the entire watchmaking process, the appearance of all watch components must undergo systematic evaluation. Even finished watches must pass 100% rigorous inspection.
(4) The timekeeping precision of Patek Philippe watches must be tested at different stages of production — whether as a raw movement or as a fully cased watch. The final timekeeping test is conducted using a human motion simulator. Results must meet the following Patek Philippe precision standards:
① For movements with a diameter greater than 20mm: daily deviation of −3/+2 seconds;
② For movements with a diameter of 20mm or less: daily deviation of −5/+4 seconds.
(5) The striking sound of all chiming watches must be measured using acoustic instruments, then approved by Philippe Stern and/or Thierry Stern. Since 2003, the acoustic characteristics of all timepieces have been archived.
(6) Regardless of the degree of polishing or finishing applied, the shape and proportions of all components — both movement and external — must remain unchanged. The finished case and bracelet, no matter how complex their structure or what surface treatment is applied, must conform to the original design template. Sharp edges are strictly prohibited. In the interest of optimizing technology and overall performance, the finished watch should be as thin as possible.
2. External Components
(1) Elegant form, premium materials, exceptional craftsmanship, and refined decorative techniques: the meticulously finished external components of a Patek Philippe watch must perfectly complement its flawless internal movement. External components must not only serve a functional purpose but also ensure comfortable and convenient wear.
(2) Diamonds must meet strict quality standards — clarity graded IF (Internally Flawless) and conforming to the top Wesselton color grade — with impeccable cutting. Each gemstone must be set vertically, with axes parallel and heights uniform. Every stone must be firmly secured.
(3) Applied three-dimensional numerals and hour markers are made of gold and mechanically fixed to ensure long-term stability. Hands are also made of gold; no other material may be used unless required by special technical or aesthetic considerations. The dial layout must always be optimized for maximum legibility. This standard also applies to diamond-set dials.
3. The Movement
(1) The movement must meet numerous stringent technical and surface finishing requirements to qualify for the Patek Philippe Seal. A timepiece crafted to the PP standard is necessarily one of outstanding function, enduring performance, precise timekeeping, and beautiful form — one that even the most discerning connoisseur cannot help but admire.
(2) The edges of all steel parts in the movement must be beveled and finished with fine circular graining, with chamfers and recesses polished. Exposed surfaces must be mirror-polished, with the exception of regulator components. Screw heads must be polished or decorated with circular graining, with their edges and slots chamfered (Fig. 1-3-17).

(3) The jewel bearings in the movement must use polished pivot holes — particularly for the gear train and specific automatic winding and lever escapement jewels. Unless it would affect the stability of the jewel bearing, flat jewels on bridges must generally be polished round, with recesses mirror-polished (Fig. 1-3-18). In addition to jewel bearings, systems that improve pivot rotation efficiency may also be used.
(4) The exterior surfaces of the barrel and barrel cover, as well as ratchet wheels, click springs, and all circular components, must be finely finished (Fig. 1-3-19). Steel gear teeth must be polished using a wooden buff.
(5) The top surface of bridges must be decorated, with chamfers and recesses polished. The underside and sides of bridges must also be finely finished. Contact surfaces are machined with precision equipment to produce beveled edges. Openings in the main plate and auxiliary bridges decorated with circular graining are chamfered, with recesses polished (Fig. 1-3-20).

(6) For traditional lever escapement balance wheels, the rim must be chamfered and diamond-polished. Spokes must be sandblasted or decorated with circular graining on the top surface (Fig. 1-3-21). The underside of both spokes and rim must also be finely finished. The balance spring must be installed in the standard manner to ensure its anti-shock performance meets NIHS standards. Unless it is an ultra-thin movement without a regulator, a regulator with a pointer or slot must be fitted wherever a stabilizing device can be integrated.
(7) The automatic rotor must be made of precious metal and elaborately decorated (Fig. 1-3-22).
