The Geneva Seal Rules 10–12: Shock Protection, Winding System & Springs
This is Part 4 — the final chapter — of our series on the Geneva Seal, the 12 strict rules that define the pinnacle of Swiss watchmaking. In this article, we cover Rules 10 through 12.

Rule 10: Shock Protection
All movements bearing the Geneva Seal must be fitted with a shock protection device (Fig. 1-3-12).

This rule was not always part of the original Geneva Seal requirements. Pocket watches from around 1900 and many movements produced between 1940 and 1970 that carried the Geneva Seal — including celebrated pieces from Jaeger-LeCoultre and Patek Philippe — were not equipped with shock protection devices. This suggests that Rule 10 was added to the Geneva Seal requirements only after 1970, reflecting the evolution of modern watchmaking standards.
Rule 11: The Winding System
The ratchet wheel and crown wheel of the winding system must be manufactured to the specific specifications of their registered model numbers. The meshing surfaces between the small steel pinion and the large steel wheel must be ground and mirror-polished (Fig. 1-3-13), ensuring smooth and effortless winding.
For durability, the small steel pinion must be of a vertical double-layer construction. The teeth of the large and small wheels should ideally be wolf-tooth shaped — a design seen in fine antique clocks and high-grade movements. In modern wristwatches, beveled and polished tooth profiles are the standard.

Rule 12: Springs
Springs formed by bending wire or flat spring stock do not meet the Geneva Seal requirements. All springs used in the movement — including click springs, date mechanism springs, automatic winding system springs, and springs for complications such as minute repeaters, chronographs, and perpetual calendars — must be crafted by milling and polishing from solid steel plate, producing components with both elasticity and beautiful, refined lines.
Regardless of the component, whenever a spring is used for return action, it must be secured by at least two positioning screws. Wire-form or flat bent springs without screw fixings are strictly prohibited under the Geneva Seal.

A Legacy of Uncompromising Excellence
The Geneva Seal is a guarantee of quality — and the very essence of watchmaking as an art form. Its one acknowledged limitation is the absence of precise, specific technical data requirements. Yet this has never diminished its authority.
A watch bearing the Geneva Seal is not merely a timepiece. It is a work of traditional craft, more collectible and more enduring than any ordinary product. Every rule exists not for appearance alone, but to ensure that the movement performs with precision, reliability, and beauty — for generations.
