Swiss ETA SA: The World's Largest Watch Movement Manufacturer
In the world of watchmaking, there is one name that every professional knows: ETA SA. It is one of the worldβs largest manufacturers of watch movements β and its influence on the global watch industry is difficult to overstate.

The History of ETA SA
The history of ETA Group traces back to the late 18th century. A factory was established in 1793; in 1855, a second factory specialising in the manufacture of Γ©bauches (semi-finished movements) was opened, later renamed ETA. In 1926, Ebauches SA was formed, consolidating the shareholdings of various Swiss blank movement manufacturers.
In 1983, following the formation of SMH (the predecessor of the Swatch Group), Ebauches SA was renamed ETA SA Fabriques dβΓbauches, commonly known simply as ETA. Today, ETA employs more than 9,000 people across facilities in Switzerland and around the world, making it one of the largest watch and movement manufacturers on earth. By 1996, annual production had reached 100 million units. Manufacturing and assembly facilities are located in Switzerland, France, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia, China, and other countries.
The Quartz Revolution and ETAβs Rise
Before the 1970s, Switzerland had many independent watch manufacturers, each producing their own in-house movements. The Quartz Revolution devastated the traditional Swiss watch industry, causing many manufacturers to collapse. The Swatch Group seized the opportunity to acquire a number of well-known watch brands, and Switzerlandβs largest movement manufacturer was absorbed into the Swatch Group. From that point, ETA β under the Swatch Group umbrella β began mass-producing quality, affordable mechanical and quartz movements. Today, 80% of Swiss watch brands use ETA movements to assemble their finished watches.
ETAβs Core Business
As the cornerstone of the Swatch Group, ETAβs principal activities are:
- Conducting technical research on Swiss watches
- Developing large-scale production of components, movements, and complete watches at competitive prices
- Mastering all technologies related to watches and production machinery
- Batch assembly of movements and complete watches
To achieve these objectives, ETA maintains its own research and development laboratories and is responsible for the design and manufacture of its own production equipment. One of ETAβs most successful recent products is the Swatch production line β to date, more than 200 million Swatch watches have been produced β entirely designed, developed, and manufactured by ETA itself. All 30+ series of ETA electronic and mechanical movements currently on the market must pass systematic quality inspection at every stage of the production process in accordance with quality assurance regulations.
ETA maintains a global parts distribution network and a movement inventory for after-sales service, and regularly distributes technical materials and international training courses to all markets, significantly strengthening ETAβs influence among professional watchmakers worldwide.
The Three Treasures of ETA: Calibres 2824, 2892, and 7750
Among all ETA movements, three calibres have earned legendary status β known in the industry as the βThree Treasuresβ: the 2824, the 2892, and the 7750. Why have these three achieved such iconic status?
Because all three have been proven by time. Their quality is reliable, their value for money is exceptional, their production volumes are the highest, and their external supply is the largest. Many brands purchase these three movements to assemble into finished watches for sale. Many independent Swiss watchmakers also purchase these movements to modify, add complications, and enhance with additional modules to create new functions.

These three movements have generated enormous revenue for ETA:
- ETA 2824 β Used by countless brands in their mechanical watches. Even TAG Heuer uses the 2824 movement. It is the most widely deployed automatic movement in the world.
- ETA 2892 β A favourite of many high-end brands. Its slimmer profile and reliable performance make it the movement of choice for dress watches and luxury complications.
- ETA 7750 β Favoured by high-end brands for its exceptional value. Its robust chronograph architecture makes it the preferred choice for professional and sports chronographs.
ETAβs Supply Restrictions
In recent years, as the global production and sales of mechanical watches have grown rapidly, ETAβs production capacity has come under increasing pressure. In early 2013, ETA reached an agreement with the relevant Swiss authorities to gradually reduce external sales of mechanical movements year by year. By 2018, external movement sales had been reduced to 30% of 2010 levels. This policy has accelerated the development of in-house movements among Swiss watch brands and has reshaped the global movement supply landscape.
Why ETA Movements Matter to Every Watch Buyer
Understanding ETA is essential for any serious watch buyer or enthusiast. When a brand states that its watch uses an βETA movement,β this is a mark of quality and reliability β not a compromise. The 2824, 2892, and 7750 are the backbone of the Swiss watch industry, trusted by brands from entry-level to haute horlogerie.
