Four things matter. Everything else is marketing. Here's how to read a watch spec sheet without getting distracted by numbers that don't affect what you'll experience wearing it.

Mechanical watch marketing is very good at making things sound complicated. Water resistance ratings in atmospheres. Power reserve to the hour. Movement caliber numbers. Crystal hardness on the Mohs scale. Jewel counts. Case height to the tenth of a millimetre.

Most of it doesn't matter for a first watch. Most of it is noise around four things that do matter. If you know those four things, you can evaluate any mechanical watch spec sheet in under two minutes and know whether it's worth your money.

This guide skips the noise and explains the four things. It also explains why each of them matters — because "automatic is better than manual" is less useful than understanding what automatic actually means and when manual might be the right choice for you.

The Four Things That Actually Matter

Automatic or Manual Winding

Both automatic and manual movements use the same mechanism: a mainspring that stores energy, a gear train that transmits it, and a balance wheel that regulates it. The only difference is how the mainspring gets wound.

Automatic: A rotor — a weighted semicircular disc — sits on the back of the movement and pivots freely around its centre. When your wrist moves during the day, the rotor spins under gravity and winds the mainspring through a ratchet mechanism. Wear it for 8–10 hours and the watch charges itself. Put it down for two days and it stops. Pick it up, give it 20–30 clockwise turns of the crown, and it runs again.

Manual: No rotor. You wind it yourself by turning the crown, typically once a day. A manual movement is slightly thinner (no rotor to accommodate) and gives you a more direct connection to the watch — the act of winding it is part of the ownership experience that many collectors value.

For a first watch: Automatic is more practical. You don't need to remember to wind it. The rotor takes care of charging during normal wear. You can always wind it manually if needed.

Beat Rate — The Number That Explains the Seconds Hand

Beat rate (bph — beats per hour) is the number of half-oscillations the balance wheel completes per hour. It sounds technical but the practical implication is simple: the beat rate determines how the seconds hand moves.

Each half-oscillation of the balance wheel releases one tooth of the escape wheel, which advances the gear train by one step, which advances the seconds hand by one tiny increment. At 21,600 bph, this happens 6 times per second — the seconds hand advances 6 steps per second, which looks like a slow sweep. At 28,800 bph, it happens 8 times per second — visually almost continuous.

What to look for: 21,600 bph or 28,800 bph. Both are good. Anything below 18,000 bph is an older or lower-grade movement. Anything below 14,400 bph should raise questions. The difference between 21,600 and 28,800 is visible but minor — you'll notice it if you compare watches side by side; you won't notice it in daily wear.

The gear ratio mathematics inside every movement is fixed: center wheel to fourth wheel is always exactly 60:1, because 60 seconds must equal one minute. The beat rate determines only how finely that 60:1 ratio is subdivided per second — not whether the watch keeps time correctly.

Case Material — What You're Actually Wearing

The case is what sits on your skin for 10 hours a day. It matters more than most watch buyers initially think — not for aesthetics, but for durability and skin safety.

316L stainless steel: The standard for decent watches. Corrosion-resistant, hypoallergenic for most people, durable, and able to take polish without degrading. Look for this specifically — not "stainless steel" as a generic claim, but 316L as a material specification.

Zinc alloy or pot metal: Common in very cheap watches. Significantly less corrosion-resistant, dents and scratches more easily, and the plating (often gold-colored) wears off to reveal the base metal within months. You can't always tell from a product photograph — look for whether the spec sheet names the case material specifically.

Crystal: Sapphire is scratch-resistant but expensive and adds to cost. Mineral glass scratches more easily. Sapphire-coated mineral glass (sometimes called "hardened mineral" or similar) sits between the two. For a first watch, mineral or sapphire-coated mineral is fine — if it scratches, a watchmaker can polish the crystal for a small fee.

What to look for: 316L stainless steel case, stated explicitly in the specifications. Mineral, sapphire-coated, or sapphire crystal. Any watch that doesn't specify the case material by grade should be treated with caution.

Whether You Can See the Mechanism

This is a preference, not a specification — but for a first mechanical watch it's worth thinking about seriously.

A conventional watch has a solid dial. The movement is entirely hidden. The hands tell you the time and that's the whole visual experience. Perfectly fine — this is how most watches in the world work.

A skeleton watch has an open dial that exposes the movement. Everything described above — the barrel, center wheel, third wheel, fourth wheel, escape wheel, balance wheel, pallet fork — is visible and moving. The seconds hand advancing step by step is produced by a lever you can watch rocking back and forth as the balance wheel oscillates. The gear train turning is the energy from the mainspring being transmitted to the hands in real time.

For many people — particularly those getting into mechanical watches for the first time — the visible mechanism changes the relationship with the watch. It stops being an accessory and becomes something to look at, something to understand, something that generates genuine curiosity about how it works. That engagement is worth something beyond the time-telling function.

For a first watch: If the mechanism is part of what drew you to mechanical watches, get a skeleton dial. There is no downside — the movement is the same either way, the dial simply reveals it or conceals it.

What to Ignore in the Marketing

"21 jewels"

Jewels are synthetic ruby bearings at pivot points. More jewels means more pivot points are jeweled, which reduces friction. But beyond a certain point, additional jewels provide no functional benefit and some watch brands add "jewels" at non-functional points to inflate the count. A 17-jewel movement and a 21-jewel movement of equivalent design perform similarly.

"10ATM water resistance"

For a dress or casual watch, 3ATM (splash resistant) is adequate. 5ATM handles handwashing and rain. 10ATM handles swimming. 20ATM and above is for diving. Unless you plan to swim with the watch, anything above 5ATM is irrelevant to your actual use.

"Swiss movement" without caliber specification

"Swiss movement" without a specific caliber number (ETA 2824, Sellita SW200, etc.) is often a marketing claim with no specific meaning. Ask for the caliber number. If no caliber number is provided, the movement origin claim is unverifiable.

Power reserve beyond 48 hours

A 38–48 hour power reserve covers two days of non-wear — more than enough for a watch you wear regularly. Extended power reserves (5 days, 10 days) are impressive engineering achievements but add cost and complexity that don't benefit most wearers.
