The Geneva Seal Rules 4–6: Regulator, Cock & Gear Train

This is Part 2 of our 4-part series on the Geneva Seal — the 12 strict rules that define the pinnacle of Swiss watchmaking. In this article, we cover Rules 4 through 6.

← Part 1: Rules 1–3

Rule 4: The Regulator

The regulator (fast/slow mechanism) must have a fixed device with fine adjustment capability — such as a swan-neck spring regulator. Ultra-thin movements are exempt from this requirement.

If no fast/slow hand is used, the balance wheel must have at least 2 or 4 adjustable timing screws. Modern rhodium-plated gold alloy timing balance wheels require at least 4 or 8 adjustable screws. A plain ring balance without timing screws is acceptable in modern movements.

Rule 5: The Cock and Other Components

The twin discs driving the balance wheel, timing adjustment components, and all parts of the fast/slow regulator mechanism must comply with Rule 1 — meaning all surfaces must be fully beveled and mirror-polished.

The twin discs must be chamfered and fully mirror-polished to the highest standard.

Rule 6: Gear Train Wheels

The rims and spokes of all gear train wheels must be beveled, and the meshing surfaces with pinions must be polished and finished.

Wheels with a thickness of 0.15mm or less need only be beveled and polished on one side, with the driving ring polished. Wheels thicker than 0.15mm must be beveled and polished on both sides.

Each of these rules reflects the same uncompromising philosophy: no detail is too small, no surface too hidden to be finished with perfection.

At Aorawa Time, we share that belief — that true luxury lives in the details you cannot see.
